Volleyball Opens Season at Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT — The Occidental women's volleyball team opened the 2019 season with a four-match tournament at the Pacific Coast Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Oxy went 1-3 on the weekend against Kean, Wentworth, Benedictine and Dallas.

Match 1: Kean 3, Occidental 0

Madelene Sellergren led Oxy with eight kills, Taylor Gorretta had six and McKenzie Christopulos added five. 

Oxy setter Lara Minassians had 24 assists and Sydney Takauye had 13 digs.

Jesse Larkin led Kean with 16 kills and Sedona Gaard added 10.

Match 2: Wentworth 3, Occidental 1 

The Tigers rallied in the second set, but couldn't sustain the momentum for long enough, falling in four.

Sellergren finished off her big first day with 12 kills and Gorretta added 11.

Minassians had 37 assists and Kennedy Dirkes had five service aces.

Claire Quick led Wentworth with 16 kills.

Match 3: Benedictine 3, Occidental 1

The Tigers won a close first set 25-23 before falling in the next three.

Sellergren led Oxy with 13 kills and seven digs. Bethany Heitland had a team-high 18 digs and four service aces.

Brook Huizenga led three Benedictine players in double-figure kills with 19. Taylor Dunwell had 12 and Molly Stock had 10.

Match 4: Occidental 3, Dallas 1

Gorretta and Sellergren led Oxy to its first win of the season with 11 kills each.

Minassians had 32 assists and Lauren Duffy had a big match defending at the net with five solo blocks and three block assists. Heitland led the Tigers with 18 digs, and Takauya and Dirkes each had 15.

The Tigers won the first set easily, 25-18, and then edged Dallas 27-25 in a key second set to take control of the match.

Ellise Anable led Dallas and the match with 12 kills.

Next Match: Oxy is back in action at the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational next weekend, beginning with Concordia (Texas) at 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 6.
