Oxy Finishes CLU Invite With Win

THOUSAND OAKS — The Occidental women's volleyball team competed at the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational this weekend, going 1-3.

Oxy finished the tournament with a win over Colby-Sawyer after losses to Concordia (Texas), Puget Sound and Centenary (La.).

Friday, Match 1: Concordia (Texas) 3, Occidental 0

Set Scores: 25-11, 25-17, 25-23

Madelene Sellergren led the Tigers with 14 kills, but Oxy didn't play well early and could recover in its first match of the tournament. Taylor Gorretta added four kills and seven digs, Lara Minassians had 16 assists and Kennedy Dirkes had 10 digs.

The Tigers were the most competitive in the third set, falling by just two.

Tristyn Massey led Concordia (Texas) with 13 kills. 

Friday, Match 2: Puget Sound 3, Occidental 1

Set Scores: 25-18, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21

Gorretta led Oxy with 17 kills and the Tigers took Game 2, but couldn't keep it rolling in a 3-1 loss. 

Lauren Duffy, Sophia The and Sellergren each added seven kills.

Katherine Carley led UPS with 10 kills.

Saturday, Match 3: Centenary (La.) 3, Occidental 2 

Set Scores: 33-35, 27-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-11

The Tigers lost a very competitive match that came down to the wire in each set, including extra points in three of them. Oxy won the first and third sets.

Sellergren had a match-high 24 kills and Goretta had 22 kills on .288 hitting. Duffy chipped in 15 kills, Minassians had 56 assists and Dirkes had 34 digs.

Saturday, Match 4: Occidental 3, Colby-Sawyer 0

Set Scores: 25-19, 25-9, 25-15

Oxy finished the four-match weekend with a clean sweep of Colby-Sawyer, 3-0.

Minassians and Sellergren each had five kills, and Duffy and McKenzie Christopulos added four.

The Tigers were outstanding on the serve, totaling 18 aces, led by Dirkes with eight, Gorretta with five and Bethany Heitland with three.

Season Impact: Oxy's record goes to 2-6 on the season.

Next Match: The Tigers have their first home contests of the season on Saturday, Sept. 14 against Providence Christian College at 11 a.m. and Westcliff at 4 p.m.
